Book Review: Outliers, the Story of Success August 2, 2009

Its been so long since I wrote about any book at all, cause its been so long too since I finished a real book, I think the last one was the 8th Habit by Stephen R Covey and because I did not blog or write anything about it, I forgot about what it said already. But I think its something on vision and leadership. About finding your voice (which is something like your calling) and helping others find their voice.

and talked about bad habits like complaining that we should stop.

and the reason I managed to finish that book was the same reason I managed to finish outliers too.

its because I ‘read’ it in the Audiobook format. First book was the 8th habit on my PSP, then I also ‘read’ some language related book (Primsleur)

Now I have my iPhone, so all my audio files are moved there and I can listen to them on the way to office. Btw my workplace provides shuttle from MRT (JE, CCK, Boon Lay) so once I got to the bus, if I can’t sleep I would ‘read’

the point is, I cannot read a real book on a moving vehicle, thus you would never see me studying on the bus, mrt, car etc unless i am really desperate. I also do not like to listen using speakers, I cant make out the words well. Therefore, since I have a personal transportation up to this point, I seldom listen to anything too.

oh well back to the book.

I have read the other book by Malcolm Gladwell, I think its the Blink book, the power of thinking without thinking and I forgot about the content also.

therefore, I need to write it down somewhere from now on, maybe I will also write something on other more fictional based works too.

The bad thing about me, I feel guilty about putting down a book that I only read halfway. For example, now I am reading a continuation of the Bourne’s trilogy by Robert Ludlum, except that he has since passed away and this latest Bourne book was written by an Eric. The story is still like a typical Bourne, high speed chase and secrecy, cock-up government agencies and corrupt practices etc. The fact that it was not written by the original author bothers me and makes me feel like abandoning the book. However, the story is quite interesting and I should not judge a book by its author?

This kind of competing ideas in my mind made the progress of the book excruciatingly slow. This book, I have it in e-book format, not the usual PDF kind I used to read on my PSP, but the real e-book format on the iPhone.

Then I have 2 other real books I am also reading, one novel by Sophie Kinsella, Shopaholics ABROAD and another one Sea of Poppies by Amitar Ghosh.

The chick-lit book is in my bag for those times i need to wait for something but do not feel like reading my news/mail/book on the iphone, which as u can guess its quite rare. Plus I feel reading chick lit is a waste of time though I enjoy it, again my competing minds fighting.

the other book has storylines that is difficult to imagine and thus progress is slow too, its supposedly my bedtime reading book so its located near the bed. well since its difficult to read, it leave me frustrated sometimes so now I am like abandoning it.

ok enough talk on other things

back on the book I am trying to review, well not really review, more like just blabber about it

s

SPOILERS AHEAD———————————————————————-

the book talked about outliers as a form of deviance, outside the statistics and in a good way, these outliers are successful in their way.

as I listened to the book instead of read it, I go through it faster and spelling of names might be inaccurate

well there are a few points

1> there is a right time and right place to be successful

first chapter talked bout Hockey players, is that in most sports which had a youth program in some sort, more people who excelled seemed to be born near the cut off date. which the book gave the example of Canadian hockey players who was recruited since young

the ones born in first quarter of the year dominates almost 70% of the all star team.

This one should be kept in mind when you are having kids perhaps, cause now its too late for urself, thus for education system like singapore where in primary school you are already streamed here and there perhaps the extra months make a difference.

I personally do not believe in it, cause when I was young, I was 1 year younger than most of my classmates and still did well in school, then again the Indonesian education system does not stream at all, so we are all trained the same way, perhaps only the schools standard matters

2> 10,000 hours of practice is needed to master something and you need opportunities and help to get through the hours

well this is related to the first point, if you r born at the right time, then probably you will get into better programs which is usually more rigorous and give u more chance to practice. Beatles were practicing close to this amount in performance time by going to hamburg for gigs at the red light district and little Bill Gates was programming non stop because his parents afford to send him to a good school which had time share access to computers and not like the punch card way of programming which kills.

Mozart too had to have his 10,000 hours

3> Being a GENIUS does not amount to success, you only need to be smart enough

4> Your parents/upbringing plays a role in your success

5> Your heritage too, plays a role

well maybe at this point you get the idea, the book is inspiring and easy to follow

I myself is very afraid of the future, not sure if I wanna do graduate studies, go to work, become an entrepreneur, get married, have kids, emigrate, live simply in kampong, etc etc

Many things to consider

and at the same time worried about my grades, my job opportunities, money matters

anyway, its a good book and I know the review is short and does not cover the whole book, but this is not about the summary of the book, just a glimpse of what is the book like and about

Tioman trip pt 1 June 22, 2009

Long awaited update ok my Tioman trip. Arranged very last minute! My lab was havig safety audit so I gave myself a week break!

Spent 3 days researching on the best place to stay. Most were already full esp those popular with singaporeans like paya beach resort. Other resort were too low end for MrK liking.

So after much research n changing of destination from Tioman to rawa island to Besar Island. We still go back to Tioman because Besar island hotels were mostly fully booked due to a filining of expedition Robinson, a survivor like reality tv show from the scandanavian country.

So we booked ourselves to Berjaya because their rooms r nice n their location just a few meters away from Renggis island, a popular snorkeling spot in Tioman as many reef sharks n live corals have been spotted there.

the jetty at Tekek

the ferry from mersing will stop at a few jetties, first at somewhere near Japamala resort, one of the YTL luxury resort in Tioman. Arguably the best and of course the most expensive place to stay in Tioman. This place reminds me alot of Banyan Tree Bintan, because its also situated on a hill.I think the stop its called Genting JETTY.

Then it will stop at Paya, where paya beach resort and tioman paya resort is located

then it moves on to Tekek, where berjaya and a few very small backpacker hostels are nearby. the airport is also here. Tekek has many many duty free shop and being the main village, the government offices and the polyclinic is also here. there is also the only ATM on the island. Yes tioman is very very laidback and underdeveloped, although the room in Berjaya is nice.

The road in Tioman is only a car width and all the cars are usually 4×4, or motorcycles. Berjaya has shuttle for their guests from the jetty. and their shuttle bus is very very old, sometimes I am quite scared of whether it can make it up the hills. though its quite a blessing cause theygo very slow round the bend and helps me enjoy the view. it was just a short 5-10 mins ride from the jetty.

more about tekek in other parts because we spent 1 afternoon n a half exploring the area by making use of the shuttle bus service.

the next stop is air papan, where all the cheap hostels/backpackers are around. its also called ABC. and supposedly the only nightlife in Tioman. Tioman natives are all muslims so they do not really make merry by drinking and singing loudly all night long. although they are duty free which means very very cheap booze

the last stop is Salang, also very close to the marine park. we didnt get to go because our tour changes itinery and supposedly all u do is feed fishes, more for children.

they used to go round the island to the other side and stop at Juara, a small bay on the other side of the island directly facing the ocean. but no longer. thus making our choice to stay at juara beach resort to be more expensive because we need to hire a 4×4. I get sick easily on bumpy ride and i dun want to start my day in tioman that way. well someday

we book ourselves to berjaya superior room at 300rm per nite for 3 nites with breakfast. if u want to know where we bought it from pls let me know.

we took the 2 pm ferry. there is 3x service for the ferry. 10 am, 2pm and last at 5pm.

we are lucky to get a room near the beach. this is a view from our room. rainy weather sucks i know but its ok, we need to rest inside the room too rite.we got a first floor room.

the superior and deluxe room at berjaya are all duplex, can be quite noisy. the agent told us its gonna be concrete. but we can hear ppl talking still esp the next door.

well basically 1st day, after 2 1/2 hr ferry ride, ferry was quite comfortable. the horror stories about ppl drowning and stuff were quickly forgotten. after all i didnt go during monsoon season

During monsoon season (oct-feb) most resorts are closed. but berjaya, being served by airport remained open.

after walking round the hotel n the beach, we went outta hotel for dinner and sunset. we ate at the chinese restaurant by the beach just outside the hotel.

then we go on monitor lizard spotting before dinner starts. there is a lot of wildlife in tioman because 90% of the area is still primary rainforests. alot of tours offer jungle and waterfall trekking too. but u know, I am a sedentary person plus i dun even bring any trekiing shoes. and we r on a budget. so we need to choose what tour we wanna go for.

and i leave u with the view on our balcony, yes we have a balcony, but we dun really use it but to hang wet clothes because yeah, insects are abound!

next i will tell u how we avoid sandflyn other insect bites and our stolen buys

Izumi Japanese Restaurant, Jurong Country Club June 10, 2009

Last Thursday, I had dinner in Jurong Country Club, located just behind Singapore Science Centre. Mr K had been raving about this place as having authentic, fresh and nice Jap food. Plus I never been to a country club before and to me, country club has this ‘atas’ (exclusive) feel. Like its members only and I am not one, so can I eat at that place kind of thought

but, you can eat at this place so long as you have the money!

located just beside the swimming pool, the restaurant gives free ice cream, coffee and tea.

their menu has no pictures!! giving me a hard time to decide, thats why most patron just chose their set meals (from $15-22 a set)

that night, MrK and I had warm green tea for drinks, for mains MrK had the eel and tempura set, while i have the silver cod fish set with sweet sauce.

both were quite good though servings were not that generous.

we end the meal by having chocolate, chocolate chip, raspberry, chocolate mint ice creams

and no, we did not finish all the ice cream, well at least i didnt

anyway spent around $48 that night, quite reasonable for a Jap dinner i think.

pics by Iphone (1 our table facing the swimming pool 2 MrK ’s set dinner 3 the interior of the restaurant)

Thursday and Friday on 7 n 8 may I went to bintan and stayed in what can be considered the best hotel there the banyan tree bintan. I stayed in the valley villa their cheapest room! But it can cost more than 400 use a night. Thankfully room was free. It’s really paradise there. The beach was pristine sand was soft. Really will return someday not sure if other parts of bintan beaches will be so nice but banyan tree bintan is truly a different place. The room is designed for 2 person everything came in doubles like double sun bed double sink n even 2 working tables

Lastly they also have 2 pools the beach pool n the spa pool

I also had opportunity to try the spa. My first spa experience ever truly relaxing and nice. It’s a massage therapy actually so never tried the whole works but I think it’s gonna be as great if not better

We were supposed to get yoga too but my travel companions were lazy

We had dinner in kelong restaurant in nearby nirwana gardens hotel normal seafood n it’s expensive

But everything in bintan is expensive n for lunch on Friday we had it at saffron in banyan itself and cost is crazyly expensive but it’s quite worth it

All the beach picture u see r snapped from inside saffron cos I am lazy to upload pic taken with my real camera when u was walking on the beach.

In all we spent more than 700 sgd for just 1 nite n 2 meals for 3 person in 1 room

Spa n room was free so those money is mainly food n ferry fees as well as other transport incidentals

Mad About Astronomy (again!) March 20, 2009

back in My JC days, I joined the astronomy club, but it wasnt that fun cos there was nothing much except stargazing, we did not do star charts or anything, just pure stargazing to see stars and the moon. we did not keep track of exciting events like the Venus transit, or the lunar or solar eclipse

but now its different, I even have homework/projects requiring me to keep track of the sun and the moon

the first lunar visibility, where does it happen and such

and the exciting solar eclipse in chinese new year

and do you know that total solar eclipse only happens once in 400 yrs if u just stay in one place. so in singapore there is no way in my lifetime to see a total solar eclipse.

however, the next eclipse of the century, meaning the best eclipse you will see in your lifetime is happening soon in 22July 2003. why is it the best is because its a very long eclipse of 6 mins plus, the longest eclipse possible is 7 mins only

it will pass by china and india, northern part of myanmar and so on…

perhaps I will make a trip there to hangzhou or shanghai to see it, however even when u r there, doesnt mean u can experience it, need some luck too, esp if the sky is overcast, the effect will not be as dramatic

and as for venus transit, only happens once every 180 yrs, but the next one is happening in 7 yrs…

why the enthusiasm regarding astronomy that is my main topic in this post

firstly is because I found out that astronomy influences so many things in our life.

from the calendar we use, be it Julian, gregorian, islamic, chinese etc, the timezones

to the weather and other cultural decision, like when is the public holidays

to exciting happenings like the midnight sun and the seasons,

how does the moon and sun looks like in different places and how to choose ur next house to get the best value out of it

for the travel lovers, many more sites to visit, like the Greenwich observatory which everyone knows, to the ancient Beijing observatory, the Kennedy space centre, the North pole and other cold places to see the beautiful Aurora Boeralis

even in NZ, there is a town dedicated to stargazing, they keep everything very dark at night for maximum stargazing  capability

so if u have not taken any science gem, i strongly advise u to take Heavenly Mathematics and Cultural Astronomy, its a very fun module and has a very fun lecturer

if u are not going to take the module u can still know alot of bout it by going to this website

http://www.math.nus.edu.sg/aslaksen/teaching/heavenly.html

lastly , I leave u with a very recent picture taken by the Hubble telescope,

its the quaduple moon transit on the gassy planet saturn,

spot titan pls

the bluetooth company is closing down and they are selling bluetooh for just like $15 for 2 but we bought a better version…initially selling for $50 each but managed to get it at $50 for 2

not for me though, I dont really use bluetooth

still very slow progresss in my FYP
